How to Tune #
Starting from standard tuning:
- String 6 — Loosen until it matches string 4 (D3) an octave down. Or match the D2 tone above.
- String 5 — Loosen until it matches string 3 (G3) an octave down. Or match the G2 tone above.
- Strings 4, 3, 2 — Leave these exactly as they are. They’re already correct.
- String 1 — Loosen until it matches string 4 (D3) an octave up. Or match the D4 tone above.
Quick check: Once tuned, strum all six strings open. You should hear a full, resonant G major chord.
Tips #
- Tune slightly sharp then back down — tuning up to pitch is more stable than coming down to it.
- Re-check string 6 last — loosening it early can slightly change the neck tension and pull other strings flat.
- Use a clip-on tuner for the initial rough tuning, then fine-tune by ear using the reference tones above.
- A capo at fret 2 in Open G gives you Open A tuning — great for playing along with horns.
